History

1995 was an auspiscious year for Graymatter because that’s when it all started. We’ve grown and learnt a lot in that time, but two things have never changed; a desire to stay independent, and an understanding that what we do can help to create positive change that delivers results.

With 70% of our ongoing business coming from referrals, we’re happy to stay true to that original vision.

Approach

So how do we do what we do? Well, as Walt Disney put it “The way to get started is to quit talking and start doing”.

So we start by listening, very carefully; interrogating, challenging, probing and distilling to get to the heart of the requirement. Then we use data, analytics and knowledge to inform the next steps and experience and creativity to bring this to life.

It’s a blended approach we refer to as winning over both hearts and minds.

People and culture

'Yep’, ‘can do’ and ‘no problem’ are three of the most overused phrases in the office, but we don’t mind that. After all, it’s that kind of positive attitude that helps define who we are. It’s also one of the reasons why we want to reward and develop those up-for-it, dedicated people so they can stay and grow with us.

In an industry where the only constant is change we’re proud that a number of our 45 strong team have been with us for over 15 years.

Not only do we invest in our people, we invest in our business processes which is why we have ISO 9001. This robust framework ensures we deliver what we say we will, when we say we will, with the help of committed Account, Project Management and Quality Assurance teams.

Did we mention we’re also a member of the Design Business Association?

Environment

Having completely overhauled our identity to be more reflective of who we are and what we stand for in 2017, we went a step further and made the dusty, chaotic and noisy decision to remodel our entire office in the autumn of 2018. This went way beyond a few coats of on-brand paint liberally applied to some of our walls. It was a total reinvention of the space, informed by the needs of the people, that make the business what it is – our employees.

The result? A space that offers a better balance of work and play, with enclosed and open areas for privacy or collaboration, and break out areas for more comfortable catch-ups.

Awards

Awards are the proof that all the hard work was worth it. The strategic planning, the meetings, the elusive ‘eureka’ moments, and the subsequent late nights agonising over the little details.

And we’re not talking just about vanity awards, although we have a few of those which we’re very proud of. We’ve been awarded by the DBA, B2B, and the DRUM not only our creative output, but for the demonstrable results that the work achieved, and that is, ultimately, what it’s all about.
